I Vote to name and shame and fine them with monies going to local community issues or the school, the amount of times I nearly get swiped off the bottom of the roundabout on welland road and Nene way because they come from the new end of welland road and try to speed to get up the hill without stoping to give way to traffic on Nene way turning right. There are two or three that i meet most days at the same time trying to overtake me, most have kids in the cars, How would they react if it was there child who was hit. when will it all stop? like people before have said only when someone is killed and probably not even then. People like that will never learn, perhaps they should get up earlier (LOL)

I would also be inclined to get residents to park on the street rather than in their drives a bit more so the road is not as clear for people to speed through

Genius idea, will you also take all the kids to one side and teach them the green cross code whilst your at it?

Even at 20mph, if a kid steps out from behind a parked car they're still gonna be in plaster!

Unfortunately they don't slow down even with cars parked as I found out to my cost. Just wish i'd got the registration of the guy in a speeding silver porsche last week so I could send him the bill.

Or, in the real world, drivers speed up to get past the parked car to beat the one coming the other way (and are looking purely at the other car, not the pavement where children might be), or they sit impatiently until they can go and then try and make up for lost time.

Interesting posts, I have been advocating the risks to children on Welland Road for years. At the last local elections I asked a doorstep canvasser what they would do about road safety and they disappeared down the drive. I am led to understand our local police officer sees it as a low priority as it is not an issue the parish council wishes to tackle. Obviously too busy chasing dog owners. The great pity is that we will soon see action when there is an accident, why not for once can we not be practive and prevent it happening in the first place. (None parent, car driver).

Some facts and figs for you all - taken over a 7 day period in March:

The average daily traffic levels (24 hrs) were 1587 vehicles southbound (ranging from 1343 per day to 1777 per day) and 1642 vehicles northbound (ranging from 1351 per day to 1863 per day).

For southbound traffic the mean speed was 24.1mph while the 85 percentile speed (the speed up to which 85% of vehicles are travelling at) was 27.9mph.

For northbound traffic speeds were slightly higher:- the mean speed was 26.7mph while the 85 percentile speed was 30.9mph. :VMad: :ban: :xxxx:

Forget speed cameras, road humps, speed signs, parking your cars on the road etc etc etc all help but are temporary or local to a specific part of Welland Road.

I believe the only true way to top this is to take away the 'rat run' altogether. How? by stopping through traffic at 2 points along Welland Road. Firstly the top end either at the corner of Huntspill or the Avon Way roundabaout and secondly at the roundabout by the little park at the bottom of Welland Road. This will allow more than adequate access to Welland Road from various points along The Mease and remove the majority of the traffic off Welaand Road altogether - just think - it could be like living in a cul de sac!!!

Problem though is the need to provide a 'hammer head' at each side of the blockage - that I do not have an answer for yet - I am clever but not that clever!!

What do you all think about this proposal?? Vote for me your independent traffic delegate - what? - oh sorry, the polls are now closed - forget that!!

I agree, something needs to be done!

Make the inner roads 20 mph, this will encourage drivers to go on to the Mease circular at the earliest opportunity. This may also be the cheapest option for the council to implement with the placing a just a few signs, and there would be no ongoing vehicle claims for damage caused by speed bumps. Planning permission would be a formality, I can't see why there should be any objections and then all we need to do is comply - easy!

It would be much safer for pedestrians, mainly the children and residents living around these roadways. Also it should help with some of the parking issues. Residents who by no fault of their own who have to leave their vehicles kerb-side can do so in the knowledge that there will be less risk of damage due to a reduction in speed and fewer vehicles using the 20 mph zones.

How and when can we get started?

have fun, frederick...
