Hurrah - my network download speed finally broke through the 50k barrier - successfully recorded as 40k - lower than ever and completely useless. Over the last 2 weeks my speed has consistently gone down at ALL times of the day, from about 750k to its new record low. :furious:
Has anyone else been having a gradual reduction in speeds since the new year?...btw i am not a BT customer for phone or Internet..
Im at the bottom end of the village near the Mease.
For info ! was getting 1.5M about 18 months ago.

I haven't looked into the background of this but I suspect it doesn't need BT infrastructure to achieve it.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to choose an infrastructure provider on merit - and reward BT for misjudging us as a market and their resulting lack of interest.

As a result of the woeful presentation given by BT to SDDC's Scrutiny Committee on 9th December (see my previous posts) I was invited to the House of Lords to meet with several Peers and BT management. This took place on Monday. I attended with the Head of IT from SDDC, Nigel Glossop and Mark Todd was able to attend for a short time. We explained the frustrations faced by many across the District (and specifically Hilton) due to poor quality, unreliable broadband. The meeting took 2 hours and the discussions and explanations were wide-ranging. We were given no concrete commitment for upgrade: indeed it was made clear again that South Derbyshire is in the last 3rd of areas to be upgraded to "superfast". This is due to cost, market conditions and "aggregating demand".We pushed the point at the meeting that, although this was extremely disappointing (because we do have the demand), it'd be manageable if the "up to" 8Mbps was reliable - which of course it's not....

However, not all doom and gloom, we now have a commitment from the Strategic Director of Openreach to carry out a survey of the Etwall exchange and its feed to and round Hilton, to assess what's there, what's wrong and what's needed for an upgrade. Another visit from BT to SDDC is to take place (as soon as can be arranged) to discuss how they can help District-wide. So I'm keeping the pressure on! It was a really useful session, lots of info, and an acknowledgement from BT that all eyes are on South Derbyshire.

I'll update when I know more about timescales etc. amy

A solution adopted in Kent:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/4159 ... twork.html

We would need Vfast available in our area and Vfast would need sufficient interest in our area to setup, however shows there are a variety of alternatives to consider which get around the distance limitations with Etwall.

Would asking a member of BT's Customer Care Team to join the village forum add value to this thread/discussion?

BT’s operating code on business/customer interaction may not allow them to join, but if the forum feel’s it could add value to the discussion I can ask!

Let me know what you think,

I have seen some postings by BT Care on http://www.ThinkBroadband.com where they help direct BT Broadband customers (if BT are billing you direct for your broadband - not wholesale BT via a reseller).

I would suggest we do not invite BT Care here.

If someone wants advice from BT (or any ISP who maintains a forum presence on Thinkbroadband) would be better visiting the forums there for advice.

We should not confuse the support they can provide their end-customers with the larger issue of poor infrastructure in this area.
The infrastructure based speed issues are currently being reviewed by South Derbys. District Council which is perhaps the best way forward for the time being.

Count me in!
This subject interests me as i will be moving to the area at the end of this month. I currently work from home so the internet is vital to me. I looked up Hilton to see what the internet is like and found your forum. I have done the math and believe that the broadband will be the same or even a little better from where i am now in stretton/ claymills (yes just up the road) right at the end of the burton exchange, where the internet is very poor especially at night and weekends.
Anybody recommend who's providing the 'best' for hilton broadband, bt, talk talk, sky?? Any advice would be gratefully received.

Becks

The Etwal exchange that feeds hilton is not unbundled so all the equipment is BT's no matter who the bill provider is, and to that end, it is all pretty poor.

Hi,

According to http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk

We are getting between 2.5 - 3.5 Mb.

We are with Plusnet, seem to be quite good, and are cheaper than most - about £12/ month with a 10gb limit.

I dont know if it makes a difference but we are in the new houses just off the mease on the same side as Hilton garage.

Thanks
