Hello,

I've just got back from a trip.

When I went (and indeed for the last three years), the line speed was 4 Meg.

Today when I connect it's 256K, is anyone else experiencing problems?

Regards,

Neil

According to Sam Knows, Dalgety Bay in Scotland has around ~4100 residential and ~130 business subscribers - not much larger than Etwall - however it has something Etwall doesn't - competition from LLU (unbundled) providers.

Sorry if this has been asked before but I couldn't face reading 18 pages of posts! What about these remote rural comunities who set up there own broadband service by buying all the kit themselves, if enough of us who are depending on internet for their business wanted it could it be a possibility? Those that need it pay for it those that don't stick with BT. I have been advised by techy guru that our line is pathetic and to buy a dongle for broadband for when the signal is soooo slow or drops out altogether as my mobile signal is good.

Hello,

As a result of the woeful presentation given by BT to SDDC's Scrutiny Committee on 9th December (see my previous posts) I was invited to the House of Lords to meet with several Peers and BT management. This took place on Monday. I attended with the Head of IT from SDDC, Nigel Glossop and Mark Todd was able to attend for a short time. We explained the frustrations faced by many across the District (and specifically Hilton) due to poor quality, unreliable broadband. The meeting took 2 hours and the discussions and explanations were wide-ranging. We were given no concrete commitment for upgrade: indeed it was made clear again that South Derbyshire is in the last 3rd of areas to be upgraded to "superfast". This is due to cost, market conditions and "aggregating demand".We pushed the point at the meeting that, although this was extremely disappointing (because we do have the demand), it'd be manageable if the "up to" 8Mbps was reliable - which of course it's not....

However, not all doom and gloom, we now have a commitment from the Strategic Director of Openreach to carry out a survey of the Etwall exchange and its feed to and round Hilton, to assess what's there, what's wrong and what's needed for an upgrade. Another visit from BT to SDDC is to take place (as soon as can be arranged) to discuss how they can help District-wide. So I'm keeping the pressure on! It was a really useful session, lots of info, and an acknowledgement from BT that all eyes are on South Derbyshire.

I'll update when I know more about timescales etc. amy

To rub it all in see how much BT is charging for fibre, announced this morning. Hardly any more than we pay BT for less than 2Mbs, and with an 10Mb upload!
Hopefully Amy's good work may eventually pay dividends. Otherwise me and I my company will be leaving.

BT Retail will start selling up to 40Mbits/sec fibre broadband from £20 per month, the company has announced.

The company will offer two packages to customers: the £20 per month deal will see upload speeds limited to up to 2Mbits/sec and will impose a 20GB monthly download cap. It also attracts a £50 connection charge.

The £25 per month deal abolishes the connection charge and the data cap, and raises the maximum upload speed to a relatively impressive 10Mbits/sec.

BT has been trialling the technology in Muswell Hill, Whitchurch and Glasgow Halfway, and the company expects to add a further four million fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) homes and businesses by the end of December 2010, rising to 10 million by mid 2012.

According to BT, 25% of these homes will also be offered the much faster fibre-to-the-premise technology, with potential speeds of up to 100Mbits/sec.

.....and BT have just upped my direct debit by over 50% to catch up a debit a/c balance of £120

For goodness sake, they should write it off to compensate for the appalling quality of the broadband service round here...... :VMad: :furious: :bash:

Off now to write a seriously stiff letter of complaint!
