I used to get a discount on my TV package that way - but I found in the end there were so few programmes we were really subscribing for that it was cheaper to just switch over to a Freeview box. This was before they included Sky+ for free in the basic packages - so there wasn't even incentive to stay for a free box as they'd have charged me another tenner on top.

Interesting that you got the broadband for £7 - seems good for a BT Wholesale price. Again typical Sky maintaining their subscriber numbers and keeping hold of whatever level of revenue they can get from each.

I don't know if I'd go back to Sky now - mainly because I can't imagine spending out another £20 a month (or whatever it is) for the basic package. Gave up on movies a very long time ago with Sky - and don't like Sports so the only hook they have for me is Broadband and entertainment mixes!

I actually can't believe Hilton doesn't have it's own exchange. Surely if bt put an exchange here etwalls connection would go up because we wouldn't be stealing from it and we'd get some crazy ass speads :D because all the new houses will have good quality cabling and we wouldn't be literally miles away from it.

Hilton, could do with its own exchange, but the cost to BT compared to the returns just dont make it finically feasible to them.

I dont think it will ever happen, we will get fiber first.

I agree. But we won't get it without government or local investment - BT aren't interested, and due to the way Ofcom classify the different markets - we get charged more for BT wholesale than elsewhere in the country - a double whammy.

Hi,

If we are truly serious about getting our rural broadband improved then we have to commit more time and support to those that are helping state our case with the relevant authorities and organisations.

The residential growth in Hilton has been immense, but it will be the businesses and business growth/demand that will determine and attract potential broadband service providers and investors to the area. In recent communications with Mark Melluish at Rutland Telecom he too emphasised this.

"Due to the demand for the services of Rutland Telecom to undertake survey’s the waiting time has extended. If the Hilton survey was a strictly residential only survey then they are estimating they would be looking at 3 to 4 months for the survey, if there were businesses in the area also committed then a survey would probably be within 6 to 8 weeks."

I believe a step forward would be to speak with all the businesses in Hilton including the business park, surveying what their thoughts are currently and what they expect from a broadband service provider in the future.

As a village we should undertake in-depth surveys and questionnaires (residential & business) so that we have substantive evidence and information for discussion/submission to the relative organisations when required.

Is someone from the village with technical knowledge able to draft an output specification for what the village requires in the form of broadband amenities, in 2 parts one for residential and one for business requirements? I guess there would be the ‘blue-sky’ thinking alongside the more practical/realistic approach, recognising some of the restrictive elements we will have to work within. We need to focus on the areas we can influence to make best use of time and resource.

Although the number of attendees at the previous meeting in the HHH was small, I am more than willing to help set up another review. Before doing this we need a clear agenda, structured in a manner that will identify the inputs, outputs and resources required to deliver any actions identified. We will also need to consider any risks .e.g. we have got what we’ve got and will have to be satisfied with it.

If anyone has thoughts on how to move this issue forward proactively please let’s be hearing from you, we need technical ideas, questionnaires, specifications, surveys, vision and a desire to get something done.

Please let me know your thoughts (good or bad) on this post along with any ideas or proposals that will contribute in keeping things moving forward towards a conclusion.

Regards, Frederick...

Ours was absolutely horrendous on Saturday night around 8pm.

I recorded between 5 and 20 Kbps (yes you read that correctly) via speedtest.net over a period of an hour. I can only presume Opal had issues as it rectified itself.

Ours has been really slow since Friday don't ask me the speed as I don't know how to work that out, but even my o/h was moaning about it! We are in the old village and usually the connection is bearable for what we need to do (except for iplayer)

I would expect pretty bad connections for the next 6 weeks as more and more people are on during the day, it is not a line speed issue it is a back end capasity issue.
